In the majority of avalanche accidents where skiers or snowboarders get caught, the avalanche was caused by the victim or someone in their group. Buried victims typically have less than 10-15 minutes to live, so it is unlikely that help will arrive in time. It is because of this that all skiers and snowboarders who go off piste should practise companion rescue - the process of using transceivers, probes and shovels to find and excavate buried avalanche victims as quickly as possible.

During the 2023-2024 winter season we will be running a number of companion rescue training days which match the AIARE Avalanche rescue syllabus. Dates will be set and advertised in the Autumn but please do get in touch if you'd like to request a companion rescue training session for you and your riding partners.

ONLINE AVALANCHE THEORY COURSE

Off Piste safety and avalanche awareness is a fascinating and imperative topic for advanced skiers and snowboarders. Whilst there is no substitute for real world experience and formal training in the mountains, there is also a lot of theory and understanding that can be studied ahead of your time in the snow. In collaboration with Backcountry Access & Alpine tutorials, we have built an online course covering the 10 essential themes in off piste safety. You can see some sample tutorials on our learn online page and access the full course on Alpine tutorials.com
